No pre-marital counseling is required or given.

However, here are the best resources I know:
The best book
The best online program
The best seminars
The best weekend conference

Remember, you are not only preparing for a wedding but a marriage!

The best book

Here is the very best pre-marital book I know of. It is called “Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts” or “Saving Your Second Marriage Before It Starts.” There is a workbook for each of you to fill out, on your own, and then discuss what you wrote. The idea is to make sure you are talking through all the important issues of life before your ceremony. After all, you’re not just planning a wedding but a marriage! There is one chapter, but only one chapter, on religion.
Saving Your Marriage Before it Starts: 7 Questions to Ask Before — and After — You Marry by Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott (a married couple)   Saving Your Second Marriage Before it Starts: 9 Questions to Ask Before — and After — You Remarry by Drs. Les & Leslie Parrott (a married couple)

• Workbook for men
• Workbook for women
The publisher says: “Meeting the needs of a generation overwhelmed by divorce odds, relationship experts Les & Leslie Parrott share seven [or nine] key questions to help couples identify and overcome stumbling blocks to a building a healthy, lifelong marriage.”
How to get these books:
  • For those of you having a platinum ceremony you will have the opportunity to purchase the book and workbooks from me at the end of our 2½ hour planning meeting.

  • For those of you having a gold or silver ceremony, you have to order it on your own (since we do not meet until the day of your wedding). Here are the ISBN numbers to help you get the right book and workbooks. Just copy and paste the ISBN number in the search field at Amazon, Borders, etc. Ordering by title can be confusing with this series.
For couples who are both marrying for the first time:
For couples where either one is marrying for the second time:

The best weekend conference

In that section, remove the bullet points for the days of week. So NOT have it for “Friday evening -- Oneness” and “Saturday morning -- Oneness”, etc.

Go to a Weekend to Remember conference.

It’s a Friday evening through Sunday afternoon at a nice resort or hotel in the Chicago area (and all over the country). Recent conferences have been at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort and Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale.

It is for engaged couples (like you) and married couples.

The conference schedule:

• Friday evening — Oneness

      • Identity the five most common causes of isolation and loneliness in marriage.

• Saturday morning — Oneness

      • Gain insight into the unseen enemy intent on destroying even the best marriage.

      • Learn the key principle that moves you from merely accepting your spouse to receiving your spouse as a treasured gift.

• Saturday afternoon — Communication

      • Understand the three elements that are essential for effective communication.

      • Discover five ways better listening will encourage your spouse to open up to you.

      • Embrace the four key elements that must be in place for a more satisfying sexual relationship.

• Saturday evening — Date Night

      • Have to, it’s required :>)

• Sunday morning — Wife/Husband

      • Explore the core job descriptions for husbands and wives.

• Sunday afternoon — Resolving Conflict

      • Probe deeper into understanding anger in your spouse.

      • Learn what to do if you're the only one who wants to make your marriage better.

      • Develop a vision for how your marriage affects the people around you, especially your children.

Unconditional money back guarantee — for the cost of the conference.”

Special pre-married breakout sessions occur Saturday morning 10:40 to 11:35 and Saturday evening 4:45 to 6:00.

Want to hear more? Listen to topic segments from the conference — the audio tour is at the bottom of the page.

Cost is $119 per person for the conference + the reduced rate at the hotel (usually around $90 per night) + meals. See location information for upcoming conferences and the hotel’s cost.

Yes, it is a Christian-based conference. I think you will still be comfortable, as long as you know that. It is a well run conference that is guaranteed to have laughter and learning. After all, every couple can improve on their communication skills. Look at the conference schedule above — this information applies to you two.

Soon after the wedding: “How can we ever thank you? Our wedding was everything we hoped for and more! Our guests have commented time and time again how romantic and personal our ceremony was. It was unlike anything any of them experienced before.

“We are so happy to hear them say that the love Scott and I have for each other was apparent in your words and how they felt that it was truly a ceremony that was focused on our commitment to our marriage. We will never forget our special day and your impact on our view of love and marriage. Thank you for your attention and beautiful words.”

2½ years later via e-mail: “By the way we are STILL receiving compliments on our wedding ceremony! I have recommended you numerous times.”
